COURSE OFFERINGS

Students who successfully complete the 10-week program of field work and study will receive University of
Alabama course credit for the following courses, totaling 15 semester hours. Fees for these courses are included in the tuition cost for program participation.



  • ANT-269 Field Archaeology

    Elementary instruction and practical experience in basic methods and techniques of archaeological field work. Instruction covers excavation and recording techniques, principles of horizontal and vertical control, note-taking and other record-keeping, preparation of measured drawings, instrument mapping, collection of special samples, and piece-plotting. Under close supervision, each student is required to devise, carry out, and write up an independent research project having relevance to the site research. 6 hours.

  • ANT-413 Peoples of Latin America

    Lecture, readings, and discussion, concerning society and culture in modern Latin America, with emphasis on the Caribbean region and Cuba. The course will be highlighted by weekend visits to a variety of urban and rural communities in Cuba. Instructor: Dr. Kathryn S. Oths. 3 hours.

  • ANT-450 Archaeology of Cuba and the Caribbean

    Lecture, readings, and discussion concerning the archaeology of the Caribbean region with emphasis on Cuba. Background information on the prehistoric colonization of the islands, cultural sequences, the development of social complexity, categories and functions of artifacts, subsistence and agriculture, settlement patterns, and the archaeology of conquest and colonization. 3 hours.

  • ANT-466 Laboratory Methods in Archaeology

    Elementary instruction in laboratory processing and interpretation of archaeological materials. Supervised practical experience in cleaning, cataloging, and conservation of artifacts, treatment of special samples, artifact classification, recording of stylistic and functional information, archaeological databases, and the fundamentals of data manipulation. 3 hours.
